Project Overview

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints needed an elevated, on-brand environment for their new administrative office in Calgary, Alberta. This new lease needed to be delivered within a compressed timeline while reflecting the organizations values of dignity, order, and welcoming.

Aray Design Studio was engaged to translate the organization’s structure into a modern, human-centered workplace that balances warmth with precision. The goal was a space that performs beautifully - meeting technical, acoustic, and accessibility requirements - while staying strategically within budget.

Challenge

Time was the governing constraint. As the first tenant on the floor, the project had to move from programming to building permit rapidly - without sacrificing craft or compliance. The design needed to communicate organizational hierarchy through spatial and material cues, while also remaining approachable and serene for staff and visitors alike.

Operationally, the project required robust circulation, clear egress, and security zoning for different user levels. Acoustic privacy was crucial for sensitive conversations, while the design also had to meet Calgary building code, barrier-free access, and life-safety requirements. The challenge: deliver a high-end result on a tight schedule and disciplined budget, while delivering an elevated brand that is both calm and sophisticated.

“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints office design demonstrates that disciplined creativity can thrive under pressure. By prioritizing human-centered design, early coordination, and selective investment, the project came in under budget while still achieving a distinctly elevated, on-brand workspace.”
RECEPTION

Approach

Every successful project begins with clarity. Aray started by developing a test fit plan rooted in the end user’s operational needs, followed by rapid design iterations to align with the clients budgetary requirements. Early coordination with mechanical and electrical consultants ensured technical accuracy from the outset.

The strategy was deliberate: invest in decisive design moments - the entry experience, leadership offices, and primary boardrooms - while simplifying and reusing existing conditions elsewhere to maintain value. This selective approach allowed the team to achieve elevated design on a practical budget.

To manage the compressed timeline, documentation was phased, keeping the process fluid and predictable. Acoustic performance was considered early, with demountable glazed partitions specified in key areas and detailed sound transmission coordination to maintain privacy where glass meets solid walls.

Success was defined not only by aesthetics, but by alignment: a space that’s on-brand, on-budget, and on-schedule, representing the organization with clarity and confidence.

Design Response

The resulting Calgary office interior is a study in calm precision. A backlit dome at reception evokes a sense of openness and aspiration - an abstract connection between sky and spirit. Warm wood tones, layered lighting, and biophilic design elements such as moss walls bring nature into the workplace, reinforcing a sense of well-being. A sculptural dove relief feature wall creates a quiet symbol of grace and unity without overt literalism. The overall design takes inspiration from the divine to provide a much needed connection to nature within an office environment.

The space planning reinforces hierarchy with subtle sophistication: three leadership offices feature enhanced ceiling articulation and lighting detail, while adjacent zones simplify in proportion and finish, maintaining a consistent rhythm across the floor. Boardrooms near the entry are refined and guest-facing, while internal meeting spaces prioritize focus and function.

Technical precision underpins every design decision. The team reclaimed an unnecessary egress corridor, converting it into usable workspace. Barrier-free access and travel paths were validated through early code coordination, while demountable systems support both speed to occupancy and adaptability for future needs. The result: a workplace that’s modern yet timeless, efficient yet deeply human.

Results & Impact

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints office design demonstrates that disciplined creativity can thrive under pressure. By prioritizing human-centered design, early coordination, and selective investment, the project came in under budget while still achieving a distinctly elevated, on-brand workspace. The building permit was approved swiftly with no conditions, a direct outcome of Aray’s clarity in documentation and deep familiarity with Calgary development standards.

Stakeholders noted the balance between refinement and practicality, emphasizing how the design expresses hierarchy through proportion, light, and material rather than opulence. The resulting workspace design supports both efficiency and serenity: leadership offices that convey quiet authority, boardrooms that impress without excess, and shared spaces that feel warm, welcoming, and spiritually grounded. The project has reinforced confidence in Aray’s ability to deliver complex tenant fit-outs on compressed timelines, while maintaining technical precision and design integrity.

Key Takeaways

This project reaffirmed Aray’s belief that elevated design and cost intelligence can - and should - coexist. By trusting intuition, leveraging research-driven insight, and coordinating early with mechanical and electrical consultants, we maintained quality and pace without compromise. The process proved that hierarchy can be expressed gracefully, through proportion, light, and detail, rather than extravagance.

Strategic reuse of existing building systems and ceiling grids not only optimized budget but also reduced waste, aligning with a sustainable interior design approach. Above all, this project underscored the strength of clarity and collaboration - that thoughtful planning, guided by empathy and expertise, can transform tight timelines into successful, enduring outcomes.
