One of the coolest things about interior design? You never stop learning

One of the things I love most about interior design is that no two projects are ever alike.

One day you might be designing a healthcare clinic, the next a restaurant, a school, a workplace, or a wellness space. Every client has different goals, every building presents different challenges, and every project requires you to think on your feet. Even after nearly two decades in the profession, I'm still learning something new on every project.

Our industry is constantly evolving. New flooring systems, countertop materials, lighting technologies, acoustic solutions, fire protection strategies, sustainability initiatives, accessibility standards, and digital tools are continuously changing the way we design and deliver projects. And now, of course, AI is beginning to influence how we work as well.

One of the benefits of being a licensed professional and a member of professional organizations is that continuing education is built into the profession. The Alberta Association of Architects (AAA), for example, requires licensed members to complete 35 hours of structured learning and 35 hours of unstructured learning every two years. That's 70 hours dedicated to professional development, ensuring we stay informed about industry innovation, evolving regulations, and emerging best practices.

What I appreciate most about these requirements is that they encourage lifelong learning. Whether it's attending conferences, completing courses, participating in webinars, or engaging with industry research, there are always opportunities to expand your knowledge while building new relationships with professionals across the industry.

Some of the most valuable learning, however, happens directly on projects.

As designers, we are constantly surrounded by experts from other disciplines. We learn from contractors and tradespeople who bring construction expertise to the table. We learn from mechanical, electrical, structural, and civil consultants who help us understand how buildings perform. We learn from product representatives who introduce new materials, technologies, and solutions. Every project becomes an opportunity to exchange knowledge and gain new perspectives.

That continuous exposure to different disciplines is something I find incredibly rewarding. Few professions provide the opportunity to collaborate with such a diverse group of experts while creating environments that positively impact people's daily lives.

The best part is that the learning never stops.

And honestly, that's what makes this profession so special.
